Kid Rock Insists His Senate Run Is "Not a Hoax"

Responding to widespread skepticism that his campaign announcement was a stunt, the singer assured fans that he will indeed be running.

"It's not a hoax, it's a strategy and marketing 101!"

That's what Kid Rock, aka Robert James Ritchie, is claiming on his website after his announcement Wednesday that he was running for U.S. Senate was met with some skepticism.

The hoax questions came from his Kid Rock for Senate site, which redirects to a Warner Bros. Records page when you click on any merchandise for sale, leading many to wonder whether the Senate run was actually just a promotional stunt for Rock's new music.

In a new blog post, titled "Once Again the Press Is Wrong," the Michigan-born rocker addressed the backlash. "I've got 15 days from my announcement to file paperwork with the FEC! Second, I’m not signed to Warner Bros!!! - which simple fact-checking would have revealed," he wrote. "I have recently worked out a unique deal with BMG, Broken Bow, CAA and Live Nation to release music ON MY TERMS. Like politicians write books during their campaigns, I'm planning on putting out music during mine and IT ALL STARTS TONIGHT AT MIDNIGHT."

As it turns out, Kid Rock completed his deal with Warner Music Group when he released his latest album, 2015's First Kiss. But, according to a rep for Rock, WMG remains his merchandise company, hence the redirected website.

In the blog, Kid Rock also responded to his would-be opponent, Democratic Michigan Sen. Debbie Stabenow, who sent out a fundraising email Wednesday following Rock's initial tweet. "We don't know if this is real or just a publicity stunt," the email read. "But after Donald Trump's surprising win last year, we need to act fast." She tweeted the following as well:

Kid Rock echoed her reply in his blog post: "Senator Stabenow and I do share a love of music, although probably not the same kind. I concede she is better at playing politics than I am so I'll keep doing what I do best, which is being a voice for tax paying, hardworking AMERICANS and letting politicians like her know that We the People are sick and tired of their bullshit!"
